How to recover data with FTP (for a large amount of data)

You can use LAlarm laptop alarm to recover data on a stolen laptop.  The following steps configure LAlarm to upload data from your laptop to your online storage account in case of laptop theft.

  1. Install LAlarm.
  2. Enable account lockout: Run Setup > Click Options link > Lockout tab > Configure link. Or see the LAlarm manual for enabling account lock and auditing policy.
  3. Sign up for an online storage account at
    DriveHQ (http://www.drivehq.com/secure/FreeSignUp.aspx?from=ftp)
  4. Install WINSCP (http://winscp.net)
  5. Configure firewalls not to block WINSCP.
  6. After running notepad, copy and paste the following contents into the notepad.option batch on
    option confirm off
    open ftp://username: -passive
    put c:\mydoc\*.*
    exit
  7. Substitute username, password with your own username and password at DriveHQ. Also replace c:\mydoc with your own folder name that you wish to recover.
  8. Save the file as c:\upload.txt (or any other folder of your choice.)
  9. Run LAlarm Setup program.
  10. Click Options
  11. Select Theft Response tab.
  12. Enter “c:\program files\winscp\winscp.com” /script=c:\upload.txt in the input box.  Note the file c:\upload.txt must be the same one that you created in the step 8.
  13. Press OK or Apply button.

Note:

  • The data retrieval will occur when an account is locked out. For example, a thief attempted to logon to your account with incorrect passwords for a number of times.
  • There is an alternative way to recover data, see also article 5.
  • In this article, DriveHQ and WinSCP are used. But you can substitute them with your own favorite storage service and file transfer program.
  • If you have important data on your laptop, you should backup the data daily. This data recovery function is not intended to substitute the daily backup.
  • Please read the LAlarm product manual before using LAlarm. The LAlarm manual is accessible by pressing the [Help] button in the LAlarm setup program.
